Sun, 27 Jun 2010 05:10:18 +0200 (AP) - James Taylor is projected on a video screen above the stage as he and Carole King perform the song ’Machine Gun Kelly’ at the last event scheduled for Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh, Saturday, June 26, 2010. Venue promoters claimed it as the largest dome building in the world when it opened as The Civic Arena with an Ice Capades show in September of 1961. The building was built so that six of the eight-300 ton wedge shaped stainless steel roof sections could open in two-minutes. Current plans are for the building to be demolished as the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team is scheduled to open a new arena a block away with a concert by Paul McCartney on August 18.
